Twelve Days Away — What No One Tells You About Losing Your Baby
Share
I know what it feels like to be twelve days away.
Twelve days away from holding your baby. Twelve days away from the name you'd already chosen, the room you'd already set up, the future you'd already started living in your mind.
My son, Grayson James Gonser, died on August 1st, twelve days before his due date. Twelve days.
There are no words for that kind of loss. And if you're reading this, you probably already know that. You know the silence that fills a room that was supposed to be full of crying. You know the weight of coming home with empty arms. You know the way people don't know what to say, so they say the wrong things or, nothing at all.
I'm not writing this to fix that. I can't. No one can.
I'm writing this because I needed everyone to know. I see you. I know your pain. And you are not alone.
What Stillbirth and Fetal Loss Really Feel Like
Stillbirth is one of the most devastating and least talked-about losses a family can experience. In the United States alone, approximately 1 in 160 pregnancies ends in stillbirth — that's roughly 21,000 babies every year. And yet, it remains one of the most isolating griefs imaginable.
You grieve someone the world barely got to meet. Someone who was everything to you.
You may feel:
- Shock, even if there were warning signs
- Guilt, even when there was nothing you could have done
- Anger at your body, at the universe, at people who get to bring their baby home
- A grief so heavy it feels physical
- Love so fierce it has nowhere to go
All of it is valid. All of it is real. And all of it deserves to be honored.
To the Parents Who Are in It Right Now
If you just lost your baby. Whether at 20 weeks, 30 weeks, or like my son Grayson, twelve days from the finish line. I want you to know something.
You are allowed to fall apart. You are allowed to be angry. You are allowed to grieve loudly, or quietly, or in whatever way your body needs to move through this.
You don't have to be strong right now. You don't have to "get back to normal." There is no normal anymore — there's only the new life you'll slowly, painfully, beautifully build around this loss.
Your baby was real. Your love is real. Your grief is real.
Grayson is the reason I built this brand. He is the reason I believe so deeply that every life. Every child, every mother, every family. Deserves to be protected and dignified. His life mattered. So does yours. So does your baby's.
The People Who Showed Up in Our Darkest Moment
In the darkest hours after we lost Grayson, two organizations from our home town in Indiana stepped in and gave us something we never could have had otherwise. Those moments with our son.
Loving Benjamin and Remembering Rowan came together for our family when we needed it most. They helped us comb his hair. They helped us hold him. We sang to him. We made videos. We took pictures. Memories that we will carry for the rest of our lives. Memories that only exist because these incredible people showed up and made them possible.
And when it was time to lay Grayson to rest, they were there for that too.
There are no words adequate enough to thank them. But we can honor what they did by making sure other families in our shoes know they exist.
We are proud to be partnering with both Loving Benjamin and Remembering Rowan. Because no parent should have to face that darkness alone, and no family should miss those moments simply because they didn't know help was available.
If you are in Indiana or connected to someone who is, please reach out to them. They are angels doing sacred work.
You Don't Have to Walk This Alone
That's why I also created a space here. A community for grieving parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends. A place where you can share your story, read others', and find people who truly understand.
Because the people who get it most are the ones who've lived it.
