My name is Tyler Gonser. And I almost didn't make it.
I was six years old the first time someone stole something from me that I could never get back.
By eight, I had been molested, raped at knifepoint by a grown man who should have protected me, and held down by neighborhood kids who took what they wanted and left me crying with a broken bike — too ashamed, too scared, and too small to tell anyone what had really happened.
So I didn't.
I went home. I stayed quiet. And I carried it.
What silence does to a child.
When no one tells you that what happened to you was wrong — when the world just keeps moving like nothing happened — you start to believe the lie. That you deserved it. That this is all you are. That your body is the only thing you have to offer.
By nine and ten years old I was already running from the pain. Sneaking out. Drinking. Smoking. Looking for anything that felt like being wanted instead of used.
Through school, through relationships, through adult life — I was treated like a trophy. A body. An object. Never a person. And because that's what I was taught from the time I was a child, I believed it for a long time.
The fall.
When my son came into this world, I thought things would change. But the pain I never dealt with followed me everywhere. I lost myself in drugs. I sold drugs. I did things I'm not proud of — not because I was a bad person, but because I was a broken one who never got the help I needed.
I watched my son grow up through a video monitor in a jail cell. I was called a deadbeat by a world that never asked why I fell. I felt like nothing. Like no one. Like the damage done to me as a child had decided my entire future.
But it didn't.
Something in me refused to stay down. Maybe it was my son. Maybe it was exhaustion from running. Maybe it was the moment I finally said out loud what had been done to me — and more than words came out. Years of pain. Years of silence. Years of believing I was worthless.
And on the other side of that — for the first time — I could breathe.

I couldn't ignore that. I won't ignore that.
