Pregnancy Rashes: What's Normal, What's Not, and What to Do
Share
Nobody warns you about the itching. Or the rashes. Or the fact that your skin is going to do things during pregnancy that you never expected. You're not alone — and most of the time, it's completely normal.
Here's a guide to the most common pregnancy rashes, what's normal, what's not, and what to do about it.
Common Pregnancy Rashes (Usually Normal)
1. PUPPP (Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy)
The most common pregnancy rash, PUPPP usually appears in the third trimester as itchy, red bumps that start in stretch marks and can spread. It's uncomfortable but not dangerous. It typically resolves after delivery.
2. Heat Rash
Your body temperature runs higher during pregnancy, making heat rash more common. It appears as small red bumps in areas where skin rubs together. Stay cool, wear breathable fabrics, and keep skin dry.
3. Stretch Mark Itching
As your skin stretches, it can become intensely itchy. This is normal. Moisturize regularly with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion or oil to help manage the itch.
4. Eczema Flare-Ups
Pregnancy hormones can trigger or worsen eczema. Use gentle, fragrance-free products and talk to your provider about safe treatment options.
When to Call Your Doctor
Most pregnancy rashes are harmless, but some require medical attention. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience:
- Intense itching on your palms or soles of your feet (could indicate cholestasis)
- A rash with fever, joint pain, or flu-like symptoms
- Blistering or open sores
- A rash that spreads rapidly or doesn't improve
- Any rash you're unsure about — always better to check
What Helps
- Cool compresses on itchy areas
- Fragrance-free, gentle moisturizers
- Loose, breathable clothing (cotton is your best friend)
- Oatmeal baths for widespread itching
- Talking to your provider about safe antihistamines if needed
