Pregnant woman sitting calmly in hospital bed with compassionate lighting — TG Clothing Co. LLC preeclampsia awareness for expecting moms

Preeclampsia Awareness: What Every Expecting Mom Needs to Know 💕

Preeclampsia is one of the most serious pregnancy complications — and one of the most misunderstood. It affects 5–10% of pregnancies worldwide, and yet so many mamas have never heard of it until they're in the middle of it.

At TG Clothing Co. LLC, this one is personal. We've sat in that hospital room. We've watched someone we love fight through it. And we never want another mama to feel blindsided by something this important.

What Is Preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to other organ systems — most often the liver and kidneys. It usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy in women whose blood pressure had previously been normal.

Left untreated, preeclampsia can lead to serious — even fatal — complications for both mother and baby. The only cure is delivery.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • High blood pressure (140/90 or higher)
  • Severe headaches that don't go away
  • Changes in vision — blurring, flashing lights, or temporary loss of vision
  • Upper abdominal pain, usually under the ribs on the right side
  • Nausea or vomiting (especially in the second half of pregnancy)
  • Sudden swelling in the face, hands, or feet
  • Shortness of breath
  • Decreased urine output

If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Do not wait.

Who Is at Risk?

While preeclampsia can affect any pregnant woman, certain factors increase the risk:

  • First pregnancy
  • History of preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy
  • Family history of preeclampsia
  • Carrying multiples (twins, triplets)
  • Age (under 20 or over 35)
  • Obesity
  • Pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or kidney disease

What You Can Do

  • Know your numbers. Track your blood pressure throughout pregnancy.
  • Attend every prenatal appointment. Many cases of preeclampsia are caught at routine checkups.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, say something. You know your body.
  • Ask questions. Don't leave an appointment without understanding your results.
