How to Choose a Nursing Bra: What No One Tells You

Nobody tells you how much time you'll spend thinking about nursing bras. And yet here you are. Don't worry — we've got you covered with everything you actually need to know.

When Should You Buy a Nursing Bra?

Most experts recommend buying your first nursing bra around 36–38 weeks of pregnancy. Your size will change after your milk comes in, so don't stock up too early. Buy 2–3 to start and add more once you know what works for you.

What to Look For

1. The Right Fit
A nursing bra should fit snugly but not tightly. You should be able to fit two fingers under the band. The cups should fully contain your breast without spillage or gaps. Get measured if you can — your size has likely changed during pregnancy.

2. Easy One-Hand Clasp
You will be doing this one-handed while holding a baby. Make sure the nursing clasp opens and closes easily with one hand. Practice in the store before you buy.

3. Soft, Breathable Fabric
Your skin will be sensitive, especially in the early weeks. Look for cotton or bamboo blends that are gentle and breathable. Avoid underwire in the early weeks as it can contribute to blocked ducts.

4. Enough Support
Your breasts will be heavier than you're used to. Look for wide straps, a supportive band, and full-cup coverage for the most comfortable support.

5. Versatility
A good nursing bra should work for day and night. Some mamas prefer a softer sleep bra for nighttime and a more structured bra for daytime. Having both is ideal.

  • You're spilling out of the cups
  • You're experiencing discomfort or pain
